I assume you’re reading this guide because you decided you need a new mattress (and not because you’re just curious about what’s going on in the world of mattresses these days). Perhaps your current mattress is hurting you, or you wake up tired. Maybe you just want a bigger size. Maybe you’re moving and don’t want to lug your old mattress from place to place. Whichever is the case, my goal is to help you select the right mattress so you don’t make a mistake and so you don’t pay a penny more than you have to.

A mattress is perhaps the most important piece of furniture in your home. If you get the recommended 8 hours of sleep per night, you will spend at least 1/3rd of your life in that mattress . That means if you keep that mattress for 9 years (which is about the average), 3 of those years will be spent on it. However, many of us don’t think about our mattresses and how it impacts our lives every day.

If you sleep on your side and have the wrong mattress, it can lead to shoulder pain or hip pain .  A good mattress for side sleeping should conform to your body, taking the pressure off your hips and shoulders and aligning your spine so that your muscles can relax.

Thus for side sleepers specifically we recommend buying a mattress online .  Don’t get roped in by a two-minute test in a store — that will tell you nothing about ultimate feel and durability in the long run.

Online companies typically have a trial period (up to 100 nights in some cases) where you can return the mattress for a full refund if it doesn’t suit your preferences.  You should definitely do your research before buying, but at least this trial process takes away the risk of you being stuck with a mattress for years that actually isn’t a great fit.

I received a free Cocoon mattress for review from Tempur Sealy. The Cocoon mattress is a mattress in a box made by Sealy. Sealy has been in the mattress industry since 1881 when the founder, from Sealy Texas began compressing cotton for use in mattresses. The company is now known as Tempur-Sealy making them the largest manufacturer of mattresses in the world.

The Cocoon mattress has been featured on Oprah’s Favorite Things list for 2016. Getting this endorsement from Oprah is a big accomplishment that should garner some recognition for the new brand.

A mattress is a large, rectangular pad for supporting the reclining body, designed to be used as a bed or on a bed frame , as part of a bed. Mattresses may consist of a quilted or similarly fastened case, usually of heavy cloth, that contains hair, straw, cotton, foam rubber, etc., or a framework of metal springs. [1] Mattresses may also be filled with air [1] or water.

Mattresses are usually placed on top of a bed base which may be solid, as in the case of a platform bed , or elastic , e.g. with an upholstered wood and wire box spring or a slatted foundation. Popular in Europe, a divan [2] incorporates both mattress and foundation in a single upholstered, footed unit. Divans have at least one innerspring layer as well as cushioning materials. They may be supplied with a secondary mattress and/or a removable "topper." Mattresses may also be filled with air or water, or a variety of natural fibers, such as in futons . Kapok is a common mattress material in Southeast Asia, and coir in South Asia.

The word mattress derives from the Arabic مَطْرَحٌ ( maṭraḥ ) [3] which means "something thrown down" or "place where something is thrown down" and hence "mat, cushion". During the Crusades Europeans adopted the Arabic method of sleeping on cushions on the floor, and the word materas eventually descended into Middle English through the Romance languages . [4] The oldest known mattress dates to around 77,000 years ago. [5]
